Chemical name

2-(2'-Hydroxy-5'-methylphenyl)-benzotriazole

CAS NO.

2440-22-4

Introduction

UV-P is a benzotriazole type UV absorber. Characterized by its strong, broad range UV absorption property, UV-P brings an excellent photostability to polymers against UV light exposure in many ways i.e. retarding color yellowing , preventing embrittlement, maintaining of mechanical properties etc.

UV-P is particularly effective in styrenic polymers, PVC, unsaturated polyesters, polyurethanes, acrylic polymers and polycarbonates.

Physical properties

Appearance: white to yellowish crystal powder

Melting Point: 129 -132 Deg. C

Assay: 99% min (HPLC)

Transmittance: 440nm: 97% min

500nm: 98% min

Ash content: 0.3% max

Advantage

• Very high photostability for its strong ability to absorb light especially in UV region(270-340nm)

• Odorless, does not bring smells to the polymers.

• Very stable to heat, and can be used in plastics which require high processing temperature.

• Low vapor pressure, very little or no loss during processing.

Applications

• Styrenic polymers: 0.2-0.5wt% for PS based on polymer wt.

0.3-0.5wt% for ABS based on polymer wt.

0.5-2.0wt% for HIPS based on polymer wt.

• Polyvinyl chloride: 0.2-0.5wt% for PVC based on polymer wt.

• Polyurethane: 0.3-1.0wt% for PS based on polymer wt.

• Polyacrylate: 0.15-0.3wt% for PS based on polymer wt.

• Polycarbonate: 0.15-0.3wt% for PS based on polymer wt.

• Unsturated Polyester: 0.2-0.4wt% for PS based on polymer wt.

Toxicity & Safety

UV-P can be safely handled without irritation caused to the skin.
